Acting in critical areas for marine biodiversity
working with top predators
Founded in 1994 at UFRRJ, the LBC focused on the sounds of marine mammals. Years later, we expanded into new areas of ecology, becoming the Cetacean Bioacoustics Laboratory.
ECoMAR's differentials
No ECoMAR, conduzimos estudos avançados para compreender as complexas interações nos ecossistemas marinhos, contribuindo para a conservação da biodiversidade marinha.
We are dedicated to protecting whales and dolphins, implementing science-based strategies to ensure the survival of these essential ocean species.
We use cutting-edge technologies to monitor the health of marine environments, providing crucial data for effective conservation policies.
We promote educational programs that inspire communities to value and protect marine resources, cultivating a culture of sustainability.
Our group establishes partnership agreements with research institutes, companies and NGOs interested in the conservation of coastal and marine ecosystems.

The Sentinels of the Sea project, led by ECoMAR/UFRJ, uses a combination of state-of-the-art methods and equipment to better understand animals that are difficult to see. In the project we use Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (also called Drones), to better understand the behavior and body condition of species, satellite and archival transmitters, to understand the movements and underwater behavior of species and remote biopsies, which allow genetic identification of sex, contaminants, hormone dosage and stable isotopes.
This project aims to contribute to the conservation of cetaceans in the Arraial do Cabo, Cabo Frio and Búzios region by understanding the dynamics of the species' habitat use and their interactions with tourist and diving boats.
Our initiative is dedicated to the conservation of two important species: the Araguaia river dolphin (Inia araguaiaensis), exclusive to Brazil and found only in this basin, and the tucuxi (Sotalia spp.), present in the lower part of the Tocantins River.
