Yesterday (September 1), ECoMAR had the honor of welcoming marine biologist Asha de Vos, one of the great inspirations in the field. Recognized worldwide for her pioneering work in the conservation of blue whales in the Indian Ocean, Asha is also known for her tireless fight in defense of the value of science produced in the Sri Lanka (your country of origin) and other countries in the Global South.
Her visit to Brazil is part of a busy schedule of academic and institutional engagements promoted by the Luisa Pinho Sartori Institute during UFRJ's biosemana (bio week). Despite her limited time, she kindly agreed to talk to the students in the laboratory. During the meeting, she shared not only her scientific career, but also personal experiences that reveal the strength and resilience necessary to build a career and international recognition from often unfavorable contexts.
May stories like Asha de Vos's gain increasing visibility and may her journey continue to serve as an inspiration. May we, like her, find the strength to press on in our own fight for science and conservation.
