Guiana dolphins under pressure on the Green Coast

ECoMAR has just published another paper, this time in the journal Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, which presents an important and worrying analysis of the situation of the Guiana dolphins on the Green Coast of Rio de Janeiro.

The study investigated how areas of suitable habitat for the Guiana dolphin—a charismatic but endangered coastal species—coincide with areas of intense human activity on the Green Coast. The overlap between these two elements is alarming: precisely where the dolphins most depend on to live, reproduce, and feed is where they encounter the greatest challenges caused by human activity, such as boat traffic, fishing, and pollution.

This overlap raises a red flag for the conservation of the species and reinforces the need for public policies that take into account this delicate coexistence between biodiversity and human development on the coast of Rio de Janeiro.
