Studying the symbolic species of Rio de Janeiro: Our journey on the Costa Verde
The Green Coast Porpoise Project, led by ECoMAR/UFRJ, has been monitoring the gray dolphin populations in Sepetiba and Ilha Grande bays since 1994, investigating the impacts of human activities on their habitat and ecology.
Advanced methodology and commitment to society
The Sentinels of the Sea project, led by ECoMAR/UFRJ, uses a combination of state-of-the-art methods and equipment to better understand animals that are difficult to see. In the project we use Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (also called Drones), to better understand the behavior and body condition of species, satellite and archival transmitters, to understand the movements and underwater behavior of species and remote biopsies, which allow genetic identification of sex, contaminants, hormone dosage and stable isotopes.
