Tocantins River Dolphin Project
The Tocantins is the river most threatened by human activity in the whole of the Amazon and is home to two genera of cetaceans endemic to Brazil
Our initiative is dedicated to the conservation of two important species: the Araguaia river dolphin (Inia araguaiaensis), exclusive to Brazil and found only in this basin, and the tucuxi (Sotalia spp.), found in the lower part of the Tocantins River.
Our work seeks to expand knowledge about these species, which face challenges such as habitat fragmentation due to hydroelectric dams and the lack of accurate information about their distribution. We believe that awareness and research are essential to protect this unique biodiversity and guarantee its future.
Tocantins River dolphins
The aquatic mammal research group at the Federal Rural University of Amazonia (UFRA) has been studying dolphins in the Tocantins River since 2012, in a long-standing partnership with ECoMar.
Research on dolphins in River Tocantins uses various tools.
Such as monitoring these animals in the natural environment to understand how the animals use their habitat, their behavior, and how they communicate.
Studies are carried out directly with local communities to understand the percepção of local residents about dolphins and their interaction with fishing.

Our work seeks to expand knowledge about these species, which are facing challenges such as habitat fragmentation. In this location, the dolphins interact with locals and tourists at the fish market where they receive food (fish), and this interaction has been taking place for over 40 years. BioMa has been monitoring these dolphins for more than 10 years, and studies include: behavior, bioacoustics, ethnobiology, genetics and animal health.habitat fragmentation due to hydroelectric dams and the lack of precise information on their distribution. We believe that awareness and research are essential to protect this unique biodiversity and guarantee its future.
